Fort Drum Tri-County Wilderness

Russell Turnpike, Gouverneur , New York 13642 - Lewis County
$71,900 88.60 Acres
Property ID 3591103

Description

Almost ninety acres of NYS forest land adjacent to Fort Drum Army Reservation for sale:  If you can't decide which north country county has the greatest options for outdoor recreational opportunities, you may find the best of three of them right here!  The northwest corner of the property happens to be the intersection of Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis Counties.  This parcel is a great place to hunt on it's own accord, but with over 67,000 available acres of Fort Drum bordering three sides, hunting, fishing, hiking, boating and exploration options would seem almost infinite!  To better understand what is available to the public, I drove from the Ft. Drum access point located near the southwest corner of the property, roughly 17 miles south to a similar access point, west of the community of Natural Bridge.  I passed through vast areas of wilderness that probably very few people ever see.  Along the way there were 'angling sites' designated by numbers, roads to the numerous water bodies and docks for launching kayaks and canoes.  And believe it or not, recreational use of 'open' areas on Ft. Drum are free!  All you need to do is acquire an annual Recreational Pass (available on line) and call the Sportsman Hotline and leave a message with details of when you will be on the property.  What a wonderful asset to have next door!  The printable 'Angling Sites on Fort Drum' brochure found below this description does an excellent job at describing each body of water or stream, the most common fish found there, and directions to it.  Deer hunting is a whole other story!  Growing up nearby I heard stories of 'monster bucks' being taken on Drum.  The owner's of this property confirmed those tales as they reminisced with me of past hunting adventures.  These folks were avid hunters, at times spending days in the woods in some of the most remote areas of Drum where the larger deer were often found.  The two major predators of deer, black bear and coyotes are numerous there as well.
This may be an opportunity of a lifetime for a family or group that thrives on outdoor recreation to own property that borders such a remote and uninhabited area in this region.  To get a feel for all that is available pick up a Recreational Pass yourself and check it out on your own.  Constructing a small camp or cabin on the property might be the icing on the cake to truly enjoying all this property and area have to offer.  Less than an hours drive to the St. Lawrence River, the Adirondacks and Lake Ontario.  You might find it's the best thing you ever did for you and your family!

Directions

From the intersection of State Route 812 and County Route 24 (Russell Turnpike Road) in Balmat, travel west on CR 24, 3.5 miles to the Tri-County Marker. The northwest corner of the property is on your left.
